Hers and His

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
I've noticed that for the past 6 months or so I've tried to claim my husbands prayer rug. Sometimes I'll even wait until he's finished praying just so I can use it! He's had his for many, many years, so it's really worn down and thin. I was pretty confused when I was picking out my first two prayer rugs (one for my family's house) as to why he hung on to it when there are literally a dozen other nice, fluffy rugs in our hall closet to pick from. Like mine.
Anyway, getting out my own prayer rug (voluntarily) earlier today, I couldn't help but smile at the differences. I wondered if yours was like your husbands or different, if you shared one together, if this was the prayer rug you'd used for years and years or if you even switched them every other week--that sort of thing.
So what's the story and what do yours look like?
~*~
A Little Note:
I hope I haven't made it seem like your rug is the most important thing about praying. This definately isn't my intention. This is just for fun!
Does it matter? Absolutely not.
Is it important? Nope, on the contrary I'd call it irrelevant.
Do You Need a Prayer Rug? It's sufficent to simply pray on a clean space.
So don't get me wrong, please, because the only thing that really and truly matters is that we pray sincerely and humbly to Allah Subhan'Allah Ta'la.

Awww, this is a beautiful post MJ. I also use my husband's - I don't even have one of my own. He has gotten used to praying without one because I use it so often!
Actually, his is very thin and worn out now too. It's rather cute to see it, there is even a little circle of white because of the turbah hehe.

Aww sis that is soo cute!! I think its fine to use your husbands and i know you werent saying that the rug is the most important thing,(but we know some crazy blogger would choose to focus on that, like a idiot,LOL). Maybe praying with your husbands rug is a source of comfort, actually I bet it is. You love your husband, islam and Allah, and praying with his rug is probably comforting. I BET do it too. one day insha'allah when I marry.

Salam,

I have two that I'd consider my "firsts" - one that my husband bought me early on that's a beautiful, simple gold and another one that's green & red & not that attractive. But I love it so much because it was a present from a VERY religious friend of my husbands. I was scared of him and he turned out to be the only truly kind person to welcome me to Islam. The rest of my husband's friends abandoned him and told him not to marry me and this guy supported him, and sent me a package with a beautiful Qu'ran and this prayer rug. So I keep it and I cherish it.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!

My parents bought my husband and I a joint prayer rug back from their trip to Morocco. Its like two prayer rugs joined together, one behind the other, specifically so the husband and wife can pray together. It made a lovely wedding present!

I got one too, i've had it for about 8 years i think. but i used to use another one, but I gave that one away. well anyway i took a picture of mine to show you, but seems I've misplaced the cable to transfer the picture from my cellphone(dont start suggesting using bluetooth because I have no idea how that works:)

mashallah cute post. i wanna use my husbands too:) would feel as just another thing to share and unite us.

i hate sharing my prayer mat!!! i go mad when any body uses mine...there is plenty to go around! i have let my hub and sis use it in the past, but they know better now.

MashaAllah! I do the same thing. His is nothing special, just a plain dark burgundy color with a thin gold trim but I LOVE IT!

When he is gone I only use his. It's just something about it that comforts me. I often think about all the times he's prayed on it before we met like-
I wonder if he ever thought that someday his wife would be praying on this prayer rug that he prayed so many times before

or I wonder if he ever in a million years imagined that someday his only son would lay and play and then come to learn how to pray on that very same rug

or in those times when I am feeling distraught and I bow my head to Allah swt I wonder how many of his tears have fallen in the same spot.

These are just the things I think about. So I can totally relate to you wanting his rug, it's just something inside of us that brings us closer to them(our husbands) and perhaps even Allah swt if our husbands are born Muslim and know more than us. (I believe?)

I love your blog! MashaAllah!

we share the one rug. if we pray by ourselves we use it normally, but turn it on its side if we pray together. its kind of a close way to be together.

I don't have a personal rug that I always use for myself but after I read this, I'm thinking of finding one that has no drawings or patterns and is very thin and light weight for me to carry around in my bag(or even better in my pocket, haha!)

I usually just use whatever rug there is at home. Quite a lot of them. :)

Ange - we turn it on its side to pray together too. I really like it! Especially when he says that even when I'm not home he catches himself putting the rug sideways...

As salam alaykum from Finland!

Nice post :)
We have our own rugs, my mother-in-law brought me my favorite rug from Mekkah, I like it because it's very thin and lightweight. Sometimes I have to take it with me somewhere in my purse so I don't want it to take lots of space and to be heavy.

We sometimes share, but in general we tend to each use our own. The one I bought just after embracing Islam will always be my favourite though. It is green and pink - very simple dome-like picture on it. And it is so soft...

When I pray, I pray on the floor. My husband has a prayer rug but it hasn't been at home for some months. He was working with a Muslim guy who would force/strongly encourage him to pray, so he just left it there and hasn't gotten it since. I prayed on it once and it was so soft and fluffy. Don't know when he got it, but he usually prayed Friday prayer only, which isn't on the rug anyway, so it might not have gotten much use in the past years.

I wanted to ask though: Can husband and wife pray one beside the other when they are alone together?

Mashallah I love that the little things like a prayer rug or favorite colored hijab can draw us closer to Allah. The beauty of this rug would certainly be a small part of me wanting to make my salat that day!

My prayer rug was handmade in Turkey and is a very simple in off white and orange. I like it because the orange matches my university's colors (Go Longhorns :) and it's just so innocent looking. It's also really soft too! Cute post sweetie. Love you lots.

I get teased about my prayer rug all the time because I ordered it online and it costed me 14 dollars canadian, when everyone else I pray with uses towels they paid 3 dollars for lol. At the time I had ordered the rug as a gift for Tass however he told me to use it once I converted.
Cute post dearest sister, I love that you like to use your husband's rug.

Candice - Sure :) I certainly pray behind my husband, but that's only because where we usually pray has a massive mirror and I just feel weird praying in front of a mirror, so there's only room for us to sit with one in front and one behind.

Nice post. We don't have 'his' or 'hers' in our house; rather, each room has its own prayer rug. Hubby usually prays in the living room downstairs, while I pray in the kitchen/dining or upstairs in my bedroom.

Masha Allaah sweet post!!

my hubby and i haven't quite gotten to getting a prayer rug..

the one i had before we married i left back home..

but such fond memories coming back,i so feel like getting one!and we both would definitely share one..like we do with everything else that we possibly could share!

candice..yes..:-)but as the hubby would be the imam leading the prayer, you should be like a step behind him,but beside him..not all the way behind..

Aww thats cute sis. Umm when i get married inshallah... any tiem soon would be good. but when i do i think it be sweet to share a rug, like both use it at same time, but then again the sife needs to pray slightluy behind the husband so maybe that wont work hmm ok then, i think one rug each :D inshallah

Aww, this is so cute! We have a considerable number of prayer rugs at our house--two that we usually use, and some extras for when guests come over during Ramadan and we pray together. As for my hubby and me, our two prayer rugs are in the living room; that's where we usually pray. And it's not like he has his and I have mine; I'd use our green rug one day and our red one the next. And sometimes we'll turn one rug sideways and pray alongside one another. As for the whole I must pray behind the imam thing, we don't really think it's a big deal. And sometimes, since it's just the two of us, I get to be Imam-ette :D [no haram police comments please]
